BARRIE'S NEW PLAY
The fortnight’s run of ‘ The Boy David ’ proved a phenomenal success, for, in spite of high prices fori seats, the bookings were absolutely full during the fortnight, and the proceeds reached the unprecedented figure of £9,000, says the ‘ Weekly Scotsman.' If there was any “ fly in the ointment ’* it was that the author of the play never had the satisfaction of being present" at a public performance. Sir J. M. Barrie’s rheumatic troubles made it incumbent on him to run no risks of fresh" chills in the uncertain atmosphere _of an Edinburgh November, with its biting winds and frequent _ fogs. To many people the fogs—which are never so dense as a Glasgow fog or a London “ particular ” —are _ roi>re troublesome than the winds, owing to the readiness with which they cause catarrhal, throat, and eye troubles. When it was announced recently that Miss Bergner was Buffering from at attack’ of laryngitis apprehension spread through the audience lest the distinguished actress would be unable to appear. Happily, she was able to carry through to the end, and only a slight huskiness could be discerned in the early part of her brilliant performance. The advent of ‘The Boy David ’ will long be recalled with interest, and that interest was shared by many who were unable to see more of it than the enormous queues of motor cars that moved at a snail’s pace between Lothian road and the theatre every evening of the fortnight.
