—Ministerial.— The Minister of Public Works (Hon. R. Semple) returned to Invercargill from Stewart Island yesterday and left for Te Anau this morning. Tomorrow he will leave for the Homer tunnel, and will afterwards visit Queenstown and Pembroke. The Minister of Mines (Hon. P. C. Webb) left Invercargill to-day to visit the King Solomon mine and Nokomai before proceeding to Queenstown. Mr W. Begg was a passenger by this morning’s express, bound for Wellington. Mr W. F. Abel left for Christchurch by the express to-day. Mr T. P. M. Bevan, supervising director of Messrs Briscoe and Co., left by the express this morning on his return to England. Mr F. Johnson was a passenger from Invercargill by to-day’s through train. Mr John Craig Morrison, of the National Broadcasting Service, Wellington, accompanied by Mr lan Kerr, of Oamrau, and Mr Rodger Barton, of Wellington, passed through Dunedin on an 800-mile cycling trip of the South Island. Mr and Mrs W. J. Davie, of Naim street, Kaikorai, celebrated their golden wedding to-day. They were married at St. Paul’s Cathedral, Dunedin, by the Yen. Archdeacon Edwards on February 16, 1887, and made their home in Kaikorai. Mr Davie was born in Hobart, Tasmania, and came to Dunpdin with his parents when he was a lad of 17 years. Mrs Davie was bora, in Dunedin. Mr Davie is an old employee of Messrs Ross and Glendining, having been with the firm for 54 years. Their family of two sons and sis daughters are all alive, and there are 27 grandchildren. The resignation of Mr T. U. Wells from the position of president of the Auckland University College Council was accepted with regret by the council at a meeting yesterday. The vicepresident (Mr H. J. D. Mahon) was unanimously elected to fill the vacancy. The appointment is announced from Greymouth of Mr S. W. S. Strong, as first engineer in charge of the Dominion mining schemes and operations since their amalgamation under the Labour Department. Mr Strong, who is a son of Colonel W. J- Strong, C.B.E. (of Dunedin), was educated at the Otago Boys’ High School and the Otago University School of Mines, He graduated in 1924. He was. later employed as patrolling geologist of the Taranaki Oilfields, and had charge ot a gold prospecting scheme under the Unemployment Board on the West Latest guests at the Grand Hotel are:—Mr D.
