GAMBLING DEN RAID
FINE OF £SO ONE OF AUCKLAND'S WORST [Per United Press Association.] AUCKLAND, February 15. “ There has been pretty big. business going on here, and it is looked on as one of the worst gambling d&ns in Auckland at the present time,” said Detective-sergeant M'Hugh when Sylvester Pickett, aged 33, a labourer, one of three men arrested in a raid, on the Reservoir Billiard Saloon in Great North road on Saturday afternoon, appeared in the Police Court on a charge of assisting in the management of a common gaming house. The detective sergeant added that numerous complaints had been received about the premises. Young men, mostly on sustenahee, were being encouraged to go there, and a lot of drinking was going on. A number of empty bottles were found during the raid. Stating that he must take notice of the police report and the accused’s previous character, the Magistrate said he would be fined substantially. A month_ would be allowed to pay the fine of £SO, provided he reported twice weekly to the police.
