REGAL LILY
The beautiful and popular regal lily (Lilium regale) is one of the easiest kinds to grow, for it will thrive in almost any soil, even in clay, if a hole is dug and sand put in for drainage. If the hole is. filled in with a mixture of equal parts garden soil and leaf mould fine blooms will result. This lily is a stem-rooting kind, and the bulbs must therefore be set 4in deep in heavy soil and 6in in light ground. Place half an inch : of silver sand in s the bottom of the holes and press the bulbs in this, setting them at a slight incline to prevent water settling in the crowns and causing decay. The regal lily thrives in leaf soil, so when planting dig in plenty of this material. Old manure may be used if leaf mould is unobtainable.
Do not remove the fleshy roots found on the bulbs when these are purchased, or allow them to become dry. If the bulbs cannot be planted immediately, place them in damp sand or soil. These fleshy roots will produce new ones after planting, and these will anchor bulbs firmly in the soil. This lily is quite hardy and will pass through the winter without protection.
