London newspapers- report that the campaign against what is called business English apd; bad -English"- genet rally, inaugurated .several months ago by A. I’. Herbert, member ment and a member of the staff of ‘Punch,’ is meeting, with success. Leading commercial training schools are sweeping, away trite phrases and teaching the business men, of ; the future to write simple English. . Sir John Squire, a.well-known author, declared recently ;; ‘‘ Business-English is abominable. dt''pretends to he* efficient and is merely, long-winded;' Why write, ‘We .are. in receipt, of your esteemed favour and beg to acknowledge same,’ instead of ‘ Thank you for your letter ’?” It is a steadying thought that the people of Great Bri-< tain, confronted as they are with dangerous European problems and the immanence of war, can still find time to devote attention to the improvement of their everyday speech.—Calgary ‘Herald’ (Canada). . -
