CYCLING
OTAGO CHAMPIONSHIPS The Otago Centre’s cycling championships will be held at the Caledonian Ground to-morrow afternoon. Last year the titles were divided, three Invercargill riders each winning one, while the previous year W. Frame, also of Invercargill, took the three titles. C. Nicholson, the winner of the kilometre time trial last year, will not be riding. R. A. Siyertsen, the local rider, has been making fast times this year in kilometre events, and if he retains his form should stand a good chance of carrying off the title. However, G. Homer and W. Chalmers, also of the Dunedin Club, have not been much slower than Sivertsen in
these events, and it depends largely on conditions as to how they will be placed. O.f the visiting riders, little is known, as they have done little unpaced 'riding on their home tracks. C. Robinson, although known mostly for his sprinting, may create a surprise in this event, while IV. Frame, although not having produced his old form of late, can be expected to provide opposition again. D. Chilton, the Drummond rider, should perform well, while Jones, of the Invercargill Club, who made a good entry into the road sport during the winter, may also do well on the asphalt track The quarter-mile title, will he closely contested. C. Robinson, last year’s champion, should make a great bid to retain his title, R. Rivortscn. Dunedin’s best quarter-milcr, will also be all out for the title. With the five-mile event unpaced, many riders may be able to “sit in”
until the finish, hut if the faster men make the pace hot they should he well to the fore. Jj. Johnson, last year’s titleholder, will again he competing, but will strike strong opposition in Frame, Homer, and Sivertsen, all of whom can be relied upon to make the pace fast and be there at the finish. Although there are only five entries for the one-mile iunior championship it should be a close race. Denton, M'Connell, and Boyd, three Dunedin Club riders, have all been fairly well matched in races this season. Little is known of R. Muir, of Invercargill. The local club has presented a cup to be won outright by the rider gaining most points in championship events and the handicap race, and with the possibility of several riders being even alter the title events have been decided, interest will then be centred on the one and a half-mile handicap event.
