Edmond Challenge Shield

The most prized trophy in Otago and Southland rowing circles, the Edmund Challenge Shield, will be competed for bv the two provinces at the South Island championship regatta at Port Chi'lmors to-morrow. Inaugurated in 1901 when Mr W. F. Edmond presented the shield, the race is recognised as the most important event of the rowing year. On the 'shield are the names of C. Colnmh. E. S. Perry, H. Bradshaw, A. Tall, F. Brough, and Basslian. wlio stroked Southland in six winning crews. MR EDMOND’S GENEROSITY. The Edmond Challenge Shield contest was first held at Waihola, when a record crowd travelled to the regatta. When the suggestion of an interprovincial race was first made, Mr W. F. Edmond offered the shield, being at the time a vice-president of the Otago Rowing Club. For many years he was an active member, and for three years captain of the chib, while a rowing writer of the day stated: “Though retired from active service, he has not, like many others, allowed his connection .with his club to cease, but is one of its most energetic officials.” One of the conditions of the contest was: “The shield is to be competed for annually between the two provinces, the
