D.J.C. RACES

CUP DAY AT WIK6ATUI A HEAVY TRACK PAPER SLIPPER WINS PUBLICANS' HANDICAP During the past few years the Dunedin Jockey Club has not been lucky in respect of good -weather for its fixtures at Wingatui, but its experience this week has been its worst turn of the wheel of fortune. Early this week the prospects for a most successful meeting were the brightest. The largely increased stakes had attracted goodclass horses in the principal races, and the course had never been in better order at this season of the year. The rain on Tuesday night gave it just sufficcient moisture to taJke any sting out of the going, and it would have suited all the horses engaged, but the downpour on Wednesday afternoon and night saturated it, and early yesterday morning the committee wisely decided to postpone the opening day. The weather then cleared up, and the good drainage now installed on the course helped it to' dry up splendidly, but unfortunately rain fell again last night and early this morning, and made the course heavy for to-day’s racing. A very heavy shower fell in the city about an hour before the programme commenced, which prevented a large number of people going out. At Wingatui much less rain had fallen than in town, and the meeting opened in fine weather, but a cold wind from the south made it unpleasant. The attendance was good considering the weather, and the going heavy. WARRINGTON HURDLE HANDICAP, £150; second 22, third 8. IJm. 4-S—ROYAL SAXON, Mr E. W. Then Royal Saxon went to the front, and Chrysology fell through the nextfence. Royal Saxon was six lengths clear of Royal Pal, with Look Smart at the bead of the others rounding the far turn, then Royal Pal made a forward move, and was only two lengths behind Royal Saxon turning for home. Both Royal Pal and Look Smart made faulty jumps at the last hurdle, and Royal Saxon, now rising 14 years, won by four lengths from Royal Pal, with Golden Lap three lengths further back. , Octane and Look Smart next. Final Bell was moving in when the barrier rose and gained three lengths advantage of Mutus, Roseman, and Golden Vision. At the end of a furlong and a-half Roseman ran into second place and later on Palmyra got through on the Tails into third place. Final Bell led Roseman round the far turn with Palmyra, Mutus, and Golden Vision next. There was little change racing up the hill. Final Bell was first into the straight from Palmyra, on the rails, and Mutus with Barley Almond moving up ou the outside.
