OAMARU ITEMS

DISSATISFACTION OVER CLOSING HOURS That business premises in Oamaru were opening “ at all sorts of hours ” was the opinion expressed by Mr E. D. Watts at the meeting of the Retailers’ Committee yesterday. He stated that since the recent legislation concerning the 40-hour week had come into' force everything was upside down as far as business hours were concerned. Softgoods shops were supposed to open at 8.50 a.m., but several in the town opened at 8 o’clock and closed at the same time as those opening at the correct time. “ I think the time of opening should be 8.30 a.m., which would be more convenient to schoolboys,” said Mr Watts. Mr James Robertson said it was quite wrong for some shops to _ open earlier than others in the same line of business. The time had been stipulatedandagreed to. Members agreed that it was difficult to enforce the rule, and the discussion then lapsed. NORTH OTAGO HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY A meeting of the North Otago Horticultural Society was held recently, when the president (Mr P. Hargreaves) occupied the chair. The Chairman intimated that the “ View From the Street ” competition would be completed during the last fortnight in February, and that the judges would give their 'decisions on the evening of the autumn show. It was decided that, in the event of the schools opening on March 1; the children’s section be held as previously arranged. It was agreed to purchase 18J dozen vases. Reference was made to the impending departure of one of the lady members for‘England, and it was decided to farewell her at a garden party in the Public Gardens on February 25. ROSE OF REBEKAH LODGE At the monthly meeting of the Rose of Rebekah (Oamaru) Lodge N.G. Sister Gray presided over a good attendance of officers and members. One candidate was initiated into the order. The social half-hour took the form of a “ mystery evening,” and all present enjoyed the games, etc., which the Social Committee had arranged. Sisters C. Herron and M. Sherwin contributed solos, while 'Miss M'Neil gave a very interesting talk on her trip to England. As this was also the anniversary of the lodge the supper table was adorned with a beautiful cake, which was cut by Sister Cox, who wished the lodge every success in the future. RETAILERS' COMMITTEE The monthly meeting of the Retailers’ Committee of the Oamaru Chamber of Commerce was held yesterday. Mr H. Familton was in the chair. In reply to the committee’s letter concerning the possibility of connecting the Oamaru Railway Department’s bus with the Omarama bus service, the Kurow Motor Company wrote stating that, in order to leave after the Oamaru bus at night at 7 o’clock it would have to travel all night, and it would be impossible and unreasonable to ask the settlers to await the coach at these hours; therefore there was nothing that could be done to improve the matter. The Railways Department advised that to provide the service requested would involve the running of a special trip from Kurow, with consequential mileage from Oamaru to Kurow and return. The passenger traffic which would be likely to eventuate would not appear to warrant such a service. It was decided that the chairman and Mr G. T. Gillies interview the district traffic manager of the Railways Department with a view to securing a bus to connect with the company’s one, the innovation to be given a trial for six months. ■ It was decided to observe the following holidays for business premises for Easter; —Friday, Saturday, Monday, and Tuesday (March 26 to 30 inclusive). These dates have also been adopted by the Dunedin Ccmniittce. Referring' to street lighting, the Chairman stated that dissatisfaction was expressed by certain shopkeepers in Tees street regarding the erection of festoon lighting in Thames street. The fact that Tees street had been'omitted from such lighting displays as had been

erected elsewhere was a bone of contention with several residents in that locality.—lt was decided to interview the Lighting Committee of the Borough Council recommending that Tees street be similarly illuminated. WOMEN'S BOWLING The weather was fine for the continual tion of the ladies’ bowling tournament at Oamaru conducted by the Phoanix Ladies’ Club, and the greens rolled out well after the rain. Yesterday was devoted to the rinks competition, when some keen and interesting matches were played.
