NEW ZEALAND STANDS ALDNE AUSTRALIA'S CHALLENGE IN LAMB MARKET [Peb United Peees Association.! INVERCARGILL, January 29. His feelings when he attended the English Royal Show at Bristol last year and watched buyers from every other part of the world buying the cream of Great Britain’s stock while New Zealand breeders were forced by the live stock embargo to stand aside and,_ as he said, envy them their opportunities, were described by Mr A. S. Holms, of Waimahaka, the well-known Hereford cattle and Romney Marsh sheep breeder, in a talk to members of the directorate of the Southland Metropolitan A. and P. Association to-day. The regular meeting of the directorate hd adjourned, and Mr Holms talked informally of his experiences on his recent visit to Great Britain and the Continent.

“ I did fee! resentment that the breeders of the Dominion were’ blocked from buying at the Royal and other English shows,” Mr Holms said. “ Buyers from many other countries were active at Bristol, and representatives of Australian interests were buying extensivelv. There is no doubt that Australia is making a strong bid on the London lamb market, and we cannot afford to ignore this challenge. I found everywhere in England strong objection to the embargo, and I think it high time that New Zealand removed the cause of those feelings. New Zealand is the only part of the Empire where this embargo exists, and it is_ the farthest country from Great Britain. Experts assured us that it is not necessary, and the Dominion must _ consider doing away with these restrictions.”
