“SEATS IN HEAVEN”

A priest who was “ selling seats in heaven” has been arrested by the police in Kiszyniew, (Bessarabia. He had a “ map of heaven ” on his desk with allotments portioned out and numbers on them. Simple-minded peasants, mostly women, used to come to his house and select a position on the map. The places which were “ near God ” cost double the normal price. Those near the Archangel Gabriel were a little less. Ordinary. places cost a sum equal to two Knglish pounds. Many peasants sold their last cow to obtain a place. When the affair was discovered the priest had sold about 200 places.
