DUNEDIN DOLPHINS

NEW SWIMMING CLUB FORMED It has been said that despite its geographical position Dunedin is the most swimming-minded city in the Dominion, and a further indication of the efforts made to encourage swimming hero is the formation of a novel and unofficial club, the aims of which are designed to promote interest among non-competitive swimmers. The new club, unaffiliated to any body, will be known at the Dunedin Dolphins, and membership will be free and open to everyone, irrespective of whether thov are members of affiliated swimming clubs or not. The suggestion for the formation of such a club was made by Mr P. A. Mathieson, superintendent of the Municipal Tepid Baths, who told a ‘ Star ’ reporter that he had felt for some time there was room for such an organisation as he had proposed. There were many keen swimming enthusiasts—some members of clubs, some not—who attended the baths regularly, but being past the competitive stage or having no desire in that direction, they were given no incentive to keep in trim by swimming a regular distance every day. It would ho the aim of the Dolphins, said Mr Mathieson, to encourage swimming for health and pleasure among the older members of the community, and membership would be open only to those 25 years old or more. Before membership was granted, a prospective candidate would be expected to swim 1.000 yards a week for a month, and after becoming a member he or she would bo required to maintain the same average. The distances might be swum at any time of the day so long as a member of the staff or a club member was notified. It was hoped to arrange for the issue of a club badge, and also to arrange some such event as mid-winter swims once tho club became established. The initiation of members is to take place on Monday next at 12.15, and already a number of candidates for membership have come forward.
