■ —Vice-Regal.—■ The Governor-General (Viscount Galway) paid his first visit to Feilding yesterday, being welcomed by the mayor, councillors, and citizens of the town and district. His Excellency expressed thanks for the warmth of the welcome. Later, he visited the saleyards, where the large weekly stock sale was in progress, following which he was tendered a civic luncheon and motored to points of interest in the district. During his stay in Feilding the Governor-General was the guest of Mr R. L. Levin. —Ministerial.— The Minister of Labour (Hon. H. T. Armstrong) concluded his visit to Reefton yesterday. On Thursday he visited the Blackwater mines, Waiutu, and the prospecting operations there, and later visited the boring globe. On Thursday evening he received deputations, and loft yesterday morning for the oil prospecting works at Kotuku. He left for Christchurch this morning. Mr J. T. Campbell, manager for Great Britain and Ireland of the National Mutual Life Association, accompanied by Mrs Campbell, arrived by the Awatea from Sydney. Mr and Mrs Campbell are on a holiday visit to New Zealand. Mr J. S. Somerville, late of Hoffman’s Pharmacy, left to-day to take over the management of the Steele Chemical Proprietary Ltd., Christchurch. Mr A. M, Burns, manager of the Christchurch ‘ Press,’ arrived from Sydney by the Awatea, after a four weeks”' holiday in Australia. Mr R. G. C. M‘Nab, principal of John M‘Glashan College, returned yesterday from a holiday visit to Aucb-* land. Sir _ Frederick Hopkinson and Lady Hopkinson, of London, arrived by the Awatea on a ’holiday visit to the Dominion. Canon Percival James, of St Paul’s, Wellington, arrived yesterday _ afternoon on a short visit to Dunedin. A passenger on the Awatea was Bri-gadier-general Sir Joseph Byrne, Governor, of Kenya. The Rev. W. Allen Stevely returned yesterday from a trip to the North Island.
Mr S. G. Holland, M.P., returned to Christchurch to-day. The New Zealand Trades and Labour Council’s Federation has decided to recommend unions to support tha candidature of Mr John Tucker (Wellington) as the workers’ representative at the International Labour Office Conference at Geneya this year.
Mr Norton Oram left for Christ* church by the through express to-day. Mr Claude Young left for Christchurch to-day to attend the funeral of his father. Members of the head office and local branch staffs of the Standard Insurance Company assembled yesterday to make a presentation to Miss J. Wilson, who, after seven years’ service as one of the typistes in the office, is leaving to be married. Mr F. T. Anderson, branch manager, in making the presentation, expressed the goodwill _of the members of the staff towards Miss Wilson and their best -wishes for her future happiness and prosperity in Wellington, where she will reside. Having completed over 40 years’ service, Mr E. Hulbert, an accountant in the Post and Telegraph Department, has retired on superannuation, and on Wednesday members of the various* staffs of the Chief Post Office, Wellington, gathered to bid him farewell. Mr Hulbert served with the New Zealand Expeditionary Force, and was wounded at Messines. He was invalided back early in 1918, but rejoined ip April of that year, and again went overseas for active service. During the latter part of his association with the Post and Telegraph Department he was a prominent member and executive officer of the Post and Telegraph Officers’'
