The Australian championships have reached the quarter-finals. Following ; are the results of the men’s singles:— Bromwich beat Turnbull (South Australia), 6-2, 6-2, 6-0. Crawford beat L. Schwartz (South Australia), 6-3, 2-6, 3-6, 6-2, 6-3. _ APGrath beat A. Kay (Victoria), 6-2, 6-2, 8-6. . „ „ Hopman defeated Quist, 11-9, 3-6, 7-5, 6-3. This result was a complete surprise. Hopman ■ ontgeneralled Quist with clever variations in his game, which upset Quist, causing him to lose much of his customary accuracy. Crawford, owing to being less enthusiastic than his young opponent, went perilously close to being beaten. Bromwich, who is rapidly playing himself into the Davis Cup team, outplayed Turnbull at all stages, losing only four games. In the doubles quarter-finals the winners were Alisses J. Hartigan and M. Blick, V. Selwin and A. Hattersley, T. Coyne and N. Wynne, and Mesdames Westacott and Hopman. ANOTHER WIN FOR VINES RICHAIOND (Virginia), January 27. Vines defeated Perry 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 before a crowd of 3,000, including the Governor. The American’s powerful game under control, smashing service, and returns were too much for Perry, who played a steadier game, but was unable to - cope with the power of Vines’s shots.
