BOARD S FIRST MEETING FOR 1937 The Otago Education Board held its first meeting of the year to-day, those present being Messrs J. Wallace (chairman), C. E. Richards, D. C. Cameron, N. Colquhon, E. W. Williams, Musselburgh: Eva M. Johnstone, Cromwell D.H. ACCOUNTS PASSED. Accounts amounting to £26,798 17s lOd were passed for payment. •GRANTS APPROVED. The Education Department advised that approval had been given tor grants as follows: —Kaikorai, remodelling; Alexandra, additional room for infant department; Port Moiyneux, additional grant to provide a small cottage; ToEomairiro, woodwork room; and Wakari, half-cost of installing a septic tank system at the school. • It was decided to thank the department for the grants, and to proceed with the various jobs, except that at Wakari, which will be held over in the meantime. CARRIAGE OF PUPILS. The Education Department intimated that the Order-in-Council exempting vehicles used for the conveyance of school children from the requirements of certificates of fitness had been repealed, and in future certificates of fitness would be required. Vehicles carrying school children would also be required to comply with the requirements of the passenger service vehicle (constructional regulations, 1936), which came into operation on December 16.—1 t was decided to circularise bus contractors on the requirements of the Act. On the question of the free travel of school cliildren on railway buses, tbe Education Department intimated that the Railway Department would not provide transport in those buses except at a cost greatly in excess of that paid by the Education Department for free season tickets on the railway. The secretary said a great many children got home earlier by bus than by train. The difficulty was that the buses held only a limited number Of passengers.—Noted, HIGH SCHOOLS’ BOARDS. Messrs W. R. Brush and D. T. Fleming were appointed to represent the board on the. Otago High Schools’ Board of Governors, and Mr N. Colquhoun was appointed to the Waitaki High Schools’ Board. VARIOUS MATTERS. The Mosgiel School Committee wrote stating that a first-class asphalting job at the school would cost £l7O, and asked whether the board would consider giving £IOO, leaving the committee to find the remaining £7o.—lt was decided to accept the oner of the committee. - The Sawyers Bay Committee applied for assistance in laying concrete paths from the school to the outhouses. The architect estimated the cost at £32 12s 6d.—lt was decided to provide a third of the cost. The Sawyers Bay Committee renewed a request for a teachers’ room, the architect having reported in May last that it would cost £Bs.—The secretary of the Presbyterian Church stated that the dividing fence between the school grounds and the church grounds was in need of repairs.—It was decided to apply to the department for a grant for t a teachers’ room, and it was agreed to erect the fence, the cost of which was estimated at £ll 10s, to he shared equally. The Education Department, in replying to the board’s suggestion that the teacher’s residence at Palmerston and site be sold and a new residence provided," stated that as the building was said to be in very sound order, it was of the opinion that the proposal should he postponed until more urgent works had been dealt with.—Noted. Replying to a request for a grant for a tool shed at Pine Hill, the Education Department stated that as the work was not regarded as urgent, consideration had been postponed in the meantime.—Noted. The Alexandra Committee applied for an additional secondary class room in order to obviate the use of the woodwork room. The architect suggested that the better proposal would be the erection of a new woodwork room.— It was decided to place the matter before the Minister of Education. The Education Department intimated that it was Open for those second-year students who would be employed as probationary assistants to apply for training as third-year students in 1938 after they had completed their probationary assistantship in 1937.—Noted.
