NEW ART SCHOOL
OFFICIAL OPENING IN MANCH Originally intended to be ready for occupation by February 16, when the college was to have opened before the introduction of the infantile paralysis restrictions, the Art School, the latest adjunct of the King Edward Technical College, will not be opened until March. This decision was reached at a special meeting yesterday afternoon -of the Board of Managers, to whom the college principal (Mr W. G. Aldridge) reported that three rooms of the school would be finished by February, but the building would not be entirely completed by then owing to several fittings having to be procured from England. It was decided to invite the Minister of Education (the Hon. P. Fraser) to perform the opening ceremony. Present at the meeting were Mr J. J. Marlow (chairman), Messrs J. T. Paul, J. J. Johnson, \V. G. Cocking,' O. J. Hayward, F. L. Lawrence, J. M. Patrick, Dr R. Gardner, Mrs W. Herbert, and Miss L. Sullivan. Granted that the epidemic restrictions were still in force, the meeting agreed to approach the Health Department for permission to reopen the senior art and commercial classes on February 15, subject to the pupils being over 16 years of age. This decision was considered to be appropriate in view of the fact that no restrictions on opening at tho usual date as in former years had been placed on other commercial schools in Dunedin. Endorsement of the board’s appointment of Mr G. Tovey as head of the Art School was received from the Education Department, which authorised the expenditure of £7OO for purchasing furniture and other equipment for the new building.
