VINCENT RACES

GREAT EMPIRE WINS CLARE GUP INCREASED TOTALISATOR RETURNS After heavy rain the previous day the weather broke fine for the opening day of the Vincent Meeting. The course, carrying a heavy sward of grass, was slightly holding and slow. The attendance was not as large as on the corresponding day last year, but the crowd was in a good betting mood, and £4,545 was handled, as compared with £3,578 last year. The success of Great Empire in the Clare Memorial Handicap was very popular, though one of the outsiders of the field, and his owner and trainer, Mr Con White, received many congratulations on securing his first success in this valuable race. An unusual feature of the day’s racing was the downfall of the favourites, only two first selections winning. An inquiry was held into the running down the straight in the Vincent Trotting Stakes, in which P. Gallagher was charged with boring out on to Ayrshire. After hearing the evidence of the two drivers the Judicial Committee decided to take no action.
