LOAN OF £loo,ooo.
TO TBS EDITOR. Sir, —The Labour - members of th# City Counicl have conceived the brilliant idea of squandering on our roads and streets within the next year or two the enormous sum of £IOO,OOO (plus some grant from the Employment Promotion Fund), and at its next meeting on January 18 a resolution authorising the borrowing of .the money is to be carried. An effort is being made to give' effect to this proposal without any reference to the ratepayer* unless a demand signed bv not less than 5 per cent, of the ratepayers i* made on the council that the proposal be submitted to a vote of the ratepayers, . ; ■ What are the non-Labour members of the council doing that such posal is not receiving the publicity it deserves? Peradventure they sleepeth. Unless the ratepayers wake up, demand a poll, and in no uncertain manner squash this extravagant proposal they will find their properties saddled for all time with an additional encumbrance of £IOO,OOO and annual interest thereon, with nothing to show for it. Will you, sir, emphasise the danger, and if the Citizens’ Association* has got over the holidays it might also get busyf Ratepayers, wake up!—l am, etc.. Watchman; ' January 7.
