THAT £IOO,OOO LOAN.
TO THE EDITOR. Sir,—Let us hope that the citizens of Dunedin will not be gullible enough to support or vote for the proposed loan of no less than £IOO,OOO. It may be a good more from the Socialistic or Communistic point of view, which generally means ‘‘ me for the goods and let the other chap do the paying,” hut what about the poor ratepayers, who, though already heavily overtaxed, will have to foot the bill? The cafe of the unemployed is, by their own wish, the business of the Government, and the amount of revenue obtained by taxation is surely fully adequate to the needs of all concerned. Anyhow, the job does not belong to the municipality. The proposal to load the ratepayers with another £IOO,OOO of debt is indefensible. As the loan will be voted for by those to whom economy is abhorrent, it will be needful for interested ratepayers to roll up solidly on the 18th and record their vote against it.—l am, etc., Reason. January 7.
