February 6. —Matauiata K.C* THE ViNCEHT MEETING Of late years the Vincent Jockey Club’s annual race meeting has become on* of the most popular fixtures in Otago, and year by year as the stakes have increased the meeting has become a more important one in the way of racing. ... For this year’s fixture, which commence* to-morrow, and will be concluded on Saturday, much larger fields have been engaged than ever seen on this course before, and there is also a marked improvement in the class of horses that will be racing. Heavy rain fell in the district early in the week, and has left the course in first-class order. The first race is timed to atari at 12.30, and the following horses should run well in their respective engagements: — ,12.30.—Ophir Hack Handicap, 6f.— Roseman, New Note, and Trumpet Blast. 1.15. Matakanpi Handicap. 6f.— Half Note, Silk Paper, and Ihthyia. 2.0. New Year Harness Handicap, class 3.43, lim.—Smile Again, Seascape, and Cerebus. . 2.4s.—Clare Memorial Handicap, 1m 240yds.—Linguist, Gambler’s Luck, and Hithyia (if reserved). 3.3o.—Spottis Hack Handicap, 6f.— Henry Dawson, Combat, and Astaire. 4.15. —Vincent Trotting Stake* Handicap, class 3.5, lim.—Reconnoitre, Guywin, and Adois. 5.0. Omakau Handicap, 1m 240 yd». —Trivet, Last Link, and Linguist (if reserved), JOTTINGS Acceptances for the Wairio Meeting close- at 8 p.m., and for the Clifden Meeting at 9 p.m. to-morrow. The Wyndham trainer, E. Todd, has purchased the Wrack , pacer Chevalier from Mrs W. M‘Kenzie, of Tapanui. Song Boy was sore after his race at Wyndham, and whs not produced on cither day at Invercargill. The Auckland trotter Great Admiral has been purchased, from his breeder, J. T. Paul, by Mr G. J. Barton, and the Rowe Cup winner is to join C. Dunlevey’s team at Addington. The two-year-old Forecast, who developed a• cold ’and was ; spelled after winning a handicap at Wingatui in the -spring, has returned to F. Shaw’s stable. Last Link and Lark’s names were omitted from the list of acceptors in the Omakau Handicap, to be decided at the Vincent Meeting to-morrow afternoon. There was a general exodus of horses from Wingatui this morning en route for the .Vincent Meeting, which commences to-morrow. During the seven days of holiday racing in Otago and Southland,' Wingatui stables turned out 16 winners, Riccarton eight, Washdyke and Invercargill six each, Oamaru five, Riverton four, and Gore one. Guarantee appeared to be a little •ore on pulling up after running in the Southland Handicap on Monday, but as he has since been nominated for the Wellington Cup .there cannot be much the matter with him. The Great Northern Derby winner Essex is by Seigfried, sire of W°tan, and this success is sure to enhance the value of any yearlings by the Son-in-Law horse that are submitted at the National sales. Harold Logan and Impromptu,, who contested five match races on the West i Coast of the North Island a couple of years ago with the honours going to Impromptu, will meet again at Wanganui in March over a mile, a mile and a-quarter, and a mile and a-half. Nightlass, a winner at the Wairaiapa Meeting ,is a four-year-old daughter of Nightmarch and the Sunny Lake mare Matata, dam of Gustos, and she carries the colours of Mrs W. H. Billinger, whoso husband purchased her as a yearling for 70gs, A Melbourne report states that the South Australian Trotting Association will eliminate the poorer-class horses frOm the Inter-Dominion Championships, even though their owners may wish them to run. This decision comes too late for Indianapolis to be on the scene, and may still leave somewhat unwieldy fields for a small track. Though very unseasonable, the weather during the past fortnight has been just what was required to remedy the damage done to the course at Wingatui on the second day of the summer _ meeting, and all traces of the cutting up it received have now disappeared.

February 6.—Canterbury J.C. February 6.—Tapanui R.C. February 11, 13.—Dunedin J.C. February 11, 13. —Egmont.R.C. February 11, 13.—Poverty Bay T.C. TROTTING. January B.—Reefton T.C. January 9.—Cambridge T.C. January 16.—Timaru T.C. January 23.—N.Z. Metropolitan T.C. January 28 30. —Forbury Park T.C. January 30, February 1. —Nelson T.C. M‘Heath may require a spell before ho races again. On the return journey from Invercargill to Dunedin h© twice got down in. his box and lost a good Seal of skin. On the second occasion the train was pulled up to allow the horse to be gpt out of an awkward predicament. The Waikonaiti, Wyndham, and Oamaru Cluba closed the acceptances for their respective meetings before owners had a chance of seeing how their horses raced at the Dunedin Meeting on December 26 and 28. The result was heavy sera takings at each meeting, 43 at Waikouaiti, 29 at Wyndham, and 51 at Oamaru—a total of 123 out of 322 acceptances received. Rebel Lad ran himself out of hack class when he heat High Glee on the first day at Wingatui, but was able to carry out hjs nomination for hack events at Waikouaiti and Oamaru. The Robespierre gelding has raced very consistently since his return from Australia, and as he is a sound stayer, be should hold his own in open company. It was generally anticipated that the Melbourne Cup winner, Wotan, would be nominated for the Wellington Gup and other races at this month’* meet l ing, but in a letter received in Christchurch yesterday it was stated that be is not to be raced in New Zealand before he goes back to Australia for the autumn programmes. After the running of the Oak Handicap at Epsom on Thursday, the stipendiary steward, Mr A. Commons, asked the judicial committee to consider what action would be taken in the case of Swordsman, who, be stated, falloped for about a furlong, and whose river, F. J. Smith, in hi* opinion, did not make a serious effort to bring him back to his correct gait, and also to state what action would be taken in similar circumstances. A vote was taken and the stewards decided to take no action. Smith’s horses Swordsman anil Vain Lad had a great tussle up the straight in the Tamaki Handicap, and the former gained the decision, by a head. However, Swordsman galloped past the post and the judicial committee reversed the placings, awarding the race to Vain Lad. Dungarvan failed in the Manawatu Cup, where many considered that his rider showed an error of judgment in hanging on to him and fighting, with him during the slow pace in the first five or _ six furlongs; On the second day, with L. G. Morris .up, he just managed to dead-heat with Rona Bay, after having the race won a furlong from home, but he took the Marten Cup fairly decisively from the Manawatu Cup winner. Spiral. Both the latter races were over a mile and aquarter, and while he may have been above himself in condition for the Manawatu Cup, there remains an ele-" nient of doubt whether he will be capable of running out a mile and a-haif in company like he will meet in the Wellington Cup, There was a sensation at the post in a race at Epsom (Melbourne) on December 19, as the second favourite, Radiant Star, was in one of his worst moods. Not. a good-tempered horse at any time, he excelled himself by his display of temper. Kicking and bucking, ho delayed the start for six minutes. Lashing out, Radiant Star caused some of the other riders a lot of anxiety. Once he did take it into his head to face the machine, the starter released the barrier, and they jumped away in line. Radiant Star, however,, refused to gallop, and after going about 30 or 40 yards began to buck, and his rider, H. Skidmore, was dislodged, but fortunately no harm was done. It was a great shock to the backers of this erratic Hunting Song horse. After the race the stewards decided to ban Radiant Star from racing in the metropolitan area. The states distributed by the Southland and Wyndham Clubs during the New Year meetings came to £4,140, and owner* participated as follow;—J. M. Samson £350, C. M'Kinnon £3OO, A. Ferguson £285, L. C.
