Mr W. H. Cadwallader, of the Do partment of Labour, left for Timaru by, the second express to-day. Early settlers will regret to hear that Mrs H. E. Mackay, nee Jessie MTndoe, who has been living in Sydney for a number of years, is suffering from a severe illness at the • moment. Mrs Mackay is in her eighty-first year, and came to Dunedin from Rothsay, Scotland 78 years ago. Mr H. M. Mackay, president of Australian Society, of Otago and vice-presi-dent of the Otago Expansion League* left by the express this morning for the Bluff to join the Marama for Melbourne and Sydney. He is accompanied by Mrs Mackay, and will be absent from New Zealand for two The last trip Mr Mackay made to Australia, it will be remembered, was as a companion to the late Sir Charles Kingsford Smith in the Southern Cross on March 26, 1933, the flight being accomplished in 13h _4min. A Press Association cable message from London states that the King has approved the appointment' of Mr B. O. Newton, Minister at the Embassy in Berlin, to be His Majesty’s Envoy Extraordinary and_ Minister Plenipotentiary at Prague in succession to Mr C. ft. Bentinck, who has been appointed Ambassador at Santiago. Professor B. J. Marples, who has been appointed to the chair of biology at the University of Otago, leaves London for New Zealand by the Arawa on January 221 Professor Marples takes over his duties on March 1. Mr Hugh Duncan is in Dunedin as manager of the Auckland cricket team, and is staying at the Carlton Hotel.
