UNEMPLOYMENT

ST. HILDA RELIEF ORGAHISATIOH The final meeting of the committee of the St. Kilda Mayor’s Relief Organisation was held last Wednesday, when the mayor (Mr J. J. Marlow) presided over a good attendance of members. Accounts amounting to £39 7s lOd were approved for payment. The Secretary reported that owing to the prevailing sickness among children the children’s Christmas cheer picnic at Tahuna Park had been abandoned, but all the presents, fruit, and lollies Lad been procured, and these would be given to the parents. Forty-eight grocery orders to men on sustenance had been given out as a Christmas present. Mr J. Beattie, a former mayor and chairman of the committee, returned thanks for the invitation to be present, and instanced the good work this depot had done during his term of office, which was in the depths of the depression. It had filled a very real want indeed when hardship was prevalent through unemployment. He was pleased to see that the committee was carrying on the good work although there were not the calls on the funds that he had experienced, which was a good sign that people were getting into work. The Chairman presented the Ladies’ Committee, which did the work of the depot, with small presents as a slight appreciation of the good work they had done. Rev. G. L. Taylor spoke on the Jive interest the mayor had taken in the working of the depot, and also he paid a tribute to the Ladies’ Committee and the secretary for the hard work they had put in. Mrs Williams (president) returned thanks on behalf of the Ladies’ Committee for the present and the kind remarks..
