CALEDONIAN SOCIETY

PREPARATIONS FOR SPORTS The monthly meeting of directors of the Caledonian Society of Otago was held on Monday evening. Notwithstanding the sudden change to a holiday, there was a largo attendance of directors present. The president (Mr J. A. Johnstone) presided, and was supported by the vice-presidents (Messrs W. H. MTCenzie and A. A. Paape), with 20 directors. The Works and Grounds Committees’ report stated that the top-dressing was well advanced, and the motor truck purchased for expediting the work was giving every satisfaction. The portion where the Drainage Board operations were carried out was still causing trouble, and the committee recommended that the board be approached regarding the discovery of a satisfactory solution. An application to lease a corner of the ground for air space was referred to the Finance Committee,

The Sports and Games Committee had held two meetings, and recommended a much more comprehensive programme than of recent years. This was made possible through the 40-hour week making extra time available for the soprts. It is proposed to hold the sports on Saturday, February 20. Conveners had been appointed for each section, and the programme would provide for piping, dancing, wrestling, amateur athletics, running, and field events, cycling, primary and_ secondary schools’ events, with a special display and athletic competitions for the business firms’ teams and organisations, a gymnastic display by members of the y.M.C.A. The donors of the Begg and Roberts Cups, challenge events for secondary schoolboys, and the Hope Cup for girls’ championship sword dance, had consented to these events being revived. Mr J. A. Roberts had again offered to provide a gold medal with the Roberts Cup high jump competition. Mr Wheeler had intimated that the Piping and Dancing Association would consent to _ the Hope _ Cup being a championship and certificate event for the sword dance, 12 to 18 years of age. The Hope Silver Cup would be awarded to the team securing the highest aggregate of points in all interhouse competitions. The Henderson Silvej- Cup, which had been presented by Mr and Mrs J, C. Henderson as a challenge event, would be awarded to the team winning the ladies’ relay race. In addition, trophies will be awarded in all events on the programme. The committee suggested that as no doubt donations would be received towards the prize funds the Finance Committee should be requested to allocate a sum to the committee in support. - . The Finance Committee’s report stated that, regarding the application from the Games and Sports Committee, it was recommended that a sum up to £SO be allocated. It was also recommended that the present system of the groundsman collecting trainees’ fees be continued and that the right be left in the secretary’s hands to grant relief or modified permits to unemployed or necessitous cases at the office. The committees’ reports were approved. Betters were received from the secretary of the Dunedin Christian Youth •Movement, and from the secretary of the New Zealand Amateur Cycling Association expressing appreciation for the services rendered them by Mr Maxwell, the groundsman. . Mr T. Athol Robertson thanked the society for information furnished for his publication, the Scots Year Book. A letter from Mr E. R. Brown in connection with the Greyhound-Tin Hare Racing Club was referred to the Grounds and Finance Committees to report. A notice of motion in respect to trainees’ fees arising from the Otago Amateur Athletic Association letter by Mr B. M’Kernan, was discussed. It was pointed out that the new provision made to meet any cases of hardship should be ample to meet the position. The motion was defeated and the new conditions maintained.
