LISTENING IS A LUXURY MAIHS-SET PROBLEM A .curious problem has arisen in a Welsh town which affects users of mains-driven • wireless sets. Is such a set heated by or illuminated by electricity? The Urban District Council concerned has decided that radio receivers should use the lighting system, and that it is illegal to use the official power supply for supplying mainsdriven sets. The council has warned such set owners that they will be prosecuted if they are discovered running sets from the power supply, the charge for which is lid'a unit, instead of the lighting supply at hid a ’unit. This ruling has created an immense amount of interest among mains-driven set owners. An official, of, a well-known electrical' authority stated that .the question has not yet been tested, but in his opinion it is the heating of the valves which causes a wireless set to work,- and not illumination. Against this •" opinion it is strongly contended that wireless listening is a luxury, and does not come within the meaning of the necessary services implied in an electrical power supply.
