Mr Donald Taylor left by this morn* ing’s express on his return to Sidney* Mr Norman Buchanan left for Wei* lington this morning. At the monthly meeting of the Council of Dunedin Scottish Societies, _Mr L. M. Satterthwaite, who has retired from the position of honorary secretary of the council, after fulfilling tha duties almost since the council’s iuception, was presented with a travelling case in recognition of his services. Mr A. Wheeler (president), and delegates from the societies to Mr Satterthwnite and his work in eulogistic* terms. . As a mark of appreciation ox his broadcasts from Carisbrook during the football season, Mr R. M'Kenzie was on Thursday presented with a silvermounted writing set and a fountain pen on behalf of the listeners-in in the Wanaka district. On the occasion of his retirement Mr D. Yates was the recipient of an inscribed gold watch by his workmates as a token of the esteem and goodwill in which he was held by them throughout his long service of 45 years with the New Zealand Express Company.For 13 years in succession Mr Yates was most successful with his turnout at the summer shows.

At the Otago Hospital Board’s office yesterday afternoon Mr Augustus Button, head storeman, who is retiring from the hoard’s employment after ?8 years’ service, was presented with , a roll of notes by his fellow employees.: Mr J. Dove (chairman of the board) * making the presentation, referred- to Mr Button’s long connection with the board and the valuable - and faithful services rendered by him. Messrs John Jacobs and P. J. Priest and Miss Keiler; also spoke of the able manner in- which Mr Button had carried out his duties, and expressed good wishes for his future. A farewell social was held last Wednesday, at the Dunedin North Intermediate School, when the teachers met to cay good-bye to Mr H. Betting, who is leaving to take up the position of head master of the Roxburgh District High School. Presenting Mr Sotting with an electric reading lamp, Mr W. A. Sproat (the principal) referred to the valuable assistance he had rendered the school in all departments of work during the three years he had been first assistant, and wished him, Mrs Sotting,and family every success in their new sphere. Mr D. Simpson (a member of the staff) and Mr G. Watts (chairman of the School Committee) also added their testimony to the worth of Me Dotting as a teacher and as a colleague. The scholars also made tangible recognition of Mr Botting’s services as sports master. Lord Balfour of Burleigh, a director of the National Bank of New Zealand, will arrive in the Dominion on December 21, and during a stay of two months will inspect the branches of the hank throughout the country. Lord Balfour travelled by air from England to Australia. A Press. Association cable message from Sydney states that passengers by the Awatea, which sailed for Wellington yesterday, included Miss Jean Batten and her mother and Lord Balfour of Burleigh, chairman of the London board of the A.M.P. and a director of the National Bank of New Zealand. The last-named arrived in Sydney from London hy air. Latest arrivals at the Grand Hotel are Mr Bruno Beyer (Berlin), Mr J. C.Triffitt (Bradford), Mr Ged. Graiohen (Leipzig), Mr John Bowen (Sydney), Mr C. J. B. Norwood (Wellington),Misses B. and C. Hunter (Hamilton,. Waikato), and Messrs E. Milnes, ’F.Leonhard, Max Kunzli. H. Margolish,T. Baker, Watson Dawson, Albert Smith, F. Marshall,. F. B. Clark, and J. Boyd Clark (Christchurch).
