REDUCED HOURS

HOSPITAL BOARD EMPLOYEES The Hospital Board last night decided to reduce, from January 1, the working hours of its various staffs. Tho report of tho Finance Committee on the subject was adopted as follows : The work of the hoard calls for a 24-hour service on each day of the week, and therefore difficulty is found in so arranging that all its employees may enjoy a shorter working week and elimination of Saturday work even with increased staff, to enable an efficient service being maintained. However, in order to come into lino as far us possible with the spirit and intention of the recent legislation, although not liable by law to do so, it is recommended that as from January 1, 1937, reduced hours be brought into operation for the various staffs of the board as hereafter mentioned, the head of each department to report how he proposes to put the same into operation, providing all essential services as already referred to—viz.: —• Artisan staff (with exception of firemen) —40 hours a week. Porters—44 hours a week, and to he paid not less than tho basic wage of £3 16s a week. Wardswomeu—44 hours a week, and receive wages not exceeding Is an hour. Kitchen staff—44 hours a week. Nurses’ Home staff—44 hours a week. Seamstresses—4o hours a week. Special attendants —42 hours a week, and males paid at the rate of Is 6d an hour. Laundry—4o hours a week. Gardeners—4o hours a week.
