BOWLING CENTRE

MEETING OF EXECUTIVE PRESENTATION TO HR W. A. SCOTT A meeting of the executive of the Dunedin Howling Centre was held last night in the office of the secretary (Air R. Hanning). The president (Mr J. H. Hinton) was in the chair. BOWL TESTING LATHE. A sub-committee, consisting of Messrs Hinton, Rowley, and Richards, recommended that the centre install a wood-turning lathe, for the purpose of testing bowls, at a cost ot £27 18s, including a shed in w'hioh to house it. The recommendation was adopted. BRITISH EMPIRE GAMES. A circular was received from the New Zealand Bowling Association drawing the attention of the centre to the proposal to send a team of seven bowlers to represent New Zealand in the British Empire Games to he held in Sydney in 1938. A- portion of the funds 'required would lie provided hv the New Zealand Olympic ami British Empire Games Association, and by making provision for striking, a levy ot 3d for each member over a period of two years sufficient funds would be ob-tained-to pay the expenses of a team of seven players. A reply was asked for by December 31. as the question wottld be considered by the council in January. Tho Chairman said the centre had already turned the matter down. Mr G. A. Nelson said this proposition was different froip the one which had been considered before. Tho suggestion of making a special levy had not been made on that occasion. II a team was sent to Sydney in 1938 they would be able to see if bowling in New Zealand could derive any benefit from further representation four years later. He moved in support of the proposal. Several members said the proposal had already Ween turned down by their committees. It was finally’ resolved that the opinions of all the clubs be obtained. MR W. A. SCOTT HONOURED. After the business of the meeting had been concluded opportunity was taken to pay a tribute to Mr W. A. Scott, who for 28 years had been the official bowl tester to. the centre. Mr Hinton said that Mr Scott had a remarkable record of 28 years’ service as bowl tester to the centre. Most of the delegates were familiar with the controversy which raged over the question of the table test versus the green test for howls, but they had with them that evening Mr J. J. Marlow, who had been president of the New Zealand Bowling Association when the green test had at last been universally adopted, and he, no doubt, could tell them of the fight which had to he made for what was concluded to be the only fair test of bowls. Mr Scott could look hack on a very long term of service, but even lie could not claim to have pleased everyone. That would have been impossible, for every man jn such a position was certain to have his critics, but he had given satisfaction to a very large majority of the bowling fraternity, it was also a fact that Mr Scott had not acted in that capacity for personal gain, as it was known that he distributed all the bowl-testing fees collected among various charitable organisations, which must have benefited hv a considerable sum during the past 28 years. They were sorry that Mr Scott had had to relinquish the position, but the centre was fortunate in having a man of Mr G. A. Nelson’s calibre to carry on the work. The centre felt that it could'licit allow a servant of such longstanding to relinquish his task without some recognition of his work, and on behalf of the Dunedin Centre and the bowling fraternity as a whole the Chairman asked Mr Scott to accept a case' of cutlery for himself arid Mrs Scott as a token of the appreciation of the bowlers of Dunedin. Mr Marlow said that bowlers should never forget what they owed to Mr Scott, who was one of the originators of the present system of bowl testing. Dunedin led New Zealand, and New Zealand led the world in this respect, for the green test was the only proper test. Mr Scott had demonstrated the weakness of the table test, which was widely favoured in the past, and bowlers throughout the Dominion should be grateful to him for his solving of a vital problem. Further expressions of appreciation of Mr Scott’s work during the past quarter of a century were made by Messrs Hanning, Rowley, Connor, Smith, and Nelson, after which Mr Scott replied in reminiscent vein, and concluded hy thanking the centre and the Dunedin Club for the assistance which had been given him in his work, and also the bowlers of Dunedin for the gift which they had made to Mrs Scott and himself.
