TRAINING COLLEGE

STUDENTS FDR NEXT YEAR FIRST LIST 8F OTAGO QUOTA The Otago Education Board has been advised by the Education Department that it may admit 63 Otago applicants to the Dunedin Training College next year. That number represents the Otago quota of the Dominion total. The total number of Otago applicants for entry next year is 117, and as the quota is 63 a great many young people will not be able to fulfil their desire to enter the college next year. As there is usually an excess of applicants in Otago the board is placed in the position of being able to fill its quota with students who will be well above average suitability. On the other hand, it is a matter for regret that under the limits prescribed by the quota many suitable applicants cannot be admitted. Non-selection does not, therefore, necessarily mean that an applicant is unsuitable. Some years ago there was a scheme by which good applicants not required in one education district were taken by another board that was short of its quota before that board could proceed to select any of its own applicants of a lower grade. If this scheme is introduced by the department again this year a number of additional Otago students should gain admission to Training College. The full list of 63 selected applicants cannot be announced until the results of tho Training College and University degree examinations come to hand. The following 12, however, passed the qualifying examination m previous years and will be admitted to Training College next year:— Division A.—Hood, George Frederick; Thomas, John A. S.; Barth, Margaret E.; Brown, Phyllis M.; Cole. Beatrice M. D.; Cunliffe, Millicent V.; Kerr, Kathleen M.; Rodgers, Catherine D. Division C.—Allan, Isabel M.; Armstrong, Ailsa V.; Paape, John M.; Robertson, Joy Mi.
