KENNEL NOTES

[By Tail-waoobr.]

Word is to hand from Mr Rastall, N.Z.K.C. secretary, to the effect that tire parade at Milton may go forward so long as it is he'd under the jurisdiction of the kennel section of the Fanciers’ Club, as the date (February 6) had already been granted to that body. Milton has been advised to this effect, and so many local owners have signified their intention to be present that it has been suggested that a commodious vehicle be hired to transport both owners and dogs. It is hoped, of course, that every supporter of the kennel section will make the trip, and that those who have not yet notified the secretary (phone 23-799) of their intentions will do so at the first opportunity, so that all arrangements can be completed. Mr and Mrs Millar's nice curly-coated retriever, _ Sweet Nell, has a litter of five puppies sired by Mrs M. Shaw’s prize-winning Master Roy. There was only one dog in the family, but one or two of the others look so promising that they will be retained in the meantime. Nell was bred in Christchurch, and is from good field stock, so the pups should shape well in this direction. Both these pups and Mr Webb’s at Outram, sired by the same dog, will be the right age to start work next shooting season. Mrs E. Mothers has now in her kennels a fine litter of Sydney Silkie terriers; sired by her own dog, Tahuna Toby. Toby was bred by Mr R. Tregea, and is kept more as a pet than a show dog, the mother of the puppies being from a Christchurch kennel, and not yet shown. There was only one dog in the liter of four, but all are disposed of. I understand. These little dogs are enjoying a considerable amount of popularity in Dunedin nowadays, and the classes at future shows ought to bo worth competing in. There is a very even litter of five Cairn terrier puppies at the Lochiel kennels at present. These are by Mrs Bracks’s own dog, ch. Rosemoyne Beau Brummel (ch. Rosshire Chief, imp.— ch. Rosshire Heath, imp.), the dam being the red-fawn bitch, so long unproductive. Lleanaibh of Invergorden, from Salome of Seeonee (Sam of Eaton, "Raschie, imp.). The puppies are all red-fawns, but one bitch is dark in colour with a bright silver overlay, and hopes are entertained that she will eventually come up silver like her sire. Cairn terriers are tremendously popular at Home just now, perhaps because nearly every member of the £° ya U FamiI y °' vris one - The late King George always had little “ Bobs ” his feet, and the former King Edward has taken one, his special favourite, away with him; while at the recent Kennel Club show, in a huge eutry, Cairns were second on the list in point of numbers. The Messrs Austen report considerable success at their Leithval kennels, the Scotties by Leithval Heather Harvester (imp) arc all looking very fit, while a further litter by the same dog is to come from L. Mischief, the Austra-lian-bred winner. The tan and white ware fox terrier L. Kidlet, a daughter ir , ", . £“et of Bisto (imp.) has visited Mahaki Smokey, a son of ch. Stocksmoor Smartset (imp.), so .that the Leithval owners will have plenty to do during the summer and autumn. Mr Mazcy, of tho Lystra kennels, is also looking forward to a little activity after a quiet spell, his expectations centring in a daughter of the Austra-lian-owned ch. China Bear (imp.) and Moo Wee, a bitch Mr Mazey got across some two years age. The sire used was Lystra I* u Chong Wu, a magnificent chow, and best dog or bitch in show a few months back. This breeder has several orders booked and it is to be hoped that luck is with him this time. A visitor to the Lochiel kennels recently was Mr D. C. Webster’s West Highland white terrier Cotswold Debutante, bred by Mr Baylis, of Auckland. She came to ch. Robin Adair of Rosslyn, a dog whelped in quarantine in Australia when Mrs Zed imported Clint Checkmate from Home. Robin Adair is the only champion West Highland dog in New Zealand, while his kennel mate, ch. Lochiel Lady Ross--I,vn, is tho only champion female. Whisper of Monterey, bred by Mrs Chard in Sydney, from ch. Bunty of Lochiel, is a son of Robin Adair’s, and he is considered one of the best West Highlanders in Australia. He was made best of his breed at the last Sydney Royal, so ho can safely be said to be a successful sire. I paid a visit to Miss K. Hart’s kennels last week and found some very nice dogs housed there. Rajah is looking very fit and well, and it is a treat to see his obedience to the spoken word —a splendidly natured dog this. He is by dual champion Pompey from Mr Gilkinson’s (Invercargill) Tar, and his breeding is excellent on both sire and dam’s side. As a sire he has proved himself a very real success, one of his

sous, Mr C. J. King’s Polity Castle, being a sound typo of Labrador, and already figuring on tho winning lists at the shows. Another son, Windsor Lad of Hartlca, is in Miss Hart’s own kennel and is most promising. He is not as tall as his sire, and is filling out into a handsome dog. Lad's head is also attractive, and he should figure on the winning lists without much bother next year. Tho third inmate of this kennel is Lady Patricia of Hartlea, by Deekson of Clifton, a son of Deck (imp.) from Elmwood Sheila, a sister to eh Pompey. She is bred right and she looks it. A very fine bitch this —good head, strong, but not too heavy, thick, short body and thick tail and good-boned legs, set well under her, and of the correct length. This young Labrador is one of the best I have seen here.
