WEATHER FORECAST
GOLD AND SQUALLY The following weather forecast was issued at noon by the Meteorological Office, Wellington, covering the south-* ern district—Dunedin, Port Chalmers* Tapanui, Winton, Invercargill, Riverton, Orepuki, Bluff, Halfmoon Bay:— A rather sharp depression has crossed the Dominion. Forecast: Strong southerly winds of gale force in places, bub later decreasing. Weather cold and squally, with scattered showers, bub improving generally to-morrow. Sea* rough. STEADY RAINS COMMENCE. Scattered showers were evident early last evening, the atmosphere having become very cold, and this morning steady and heavier rain fell, interspersed with occasional brief hail, storms. There was no sign of a cessation at noon, and .the indications were for scattered . heavy showers this afternoon. Barometrio pressure was rising gradually at 29.85in* but this reading was lower than that of yesterday, when 29.9 in was registered* with a falling tendency. Temperatures have fallen considerably, the respective maxima and minima until 12.30 p.m. to-day and yesterday being 49 and 55.5 degrees and 42.2 and 49 degrees, while the readings over the whole of Wednesday were 55.9 and 40 degrees. A strong and cold south-westerly wind assisted materially in the general lowering of the temperatures, while the rainfall registered until 9 o’clock this morning w&t ,17m.
