HOLIDAY PAYMENT
WORK ON BOXING DAY In view of numerous inquiries being made as to payment necessary for work during the Christmas and New Year holidays, particularly in respect to Boxing Day, which' this year falls on a Saturday, the following statement, which has been by the Labour Department, is supplied hy the secretary of the Otago Employers’ Association : The guiding principle to bo followed in calculating the payment is that the workers are entitled to be paid a full week’s pay, but no more. Workers who ordinarily do not work on Saturday, whether they are on an hourly or weekly basis, should be paid five days for the week in which the holidays fall. Workers who ordinarily do work on Saturday should be paid for Boxing Day at their ordinary rate. Workers who are required_ to work on Boxing Day must be paid double time in addition to their ordinary wages, except in the case of the follow- ’ ing special industries Coal gas works, dairy factories,. electric power generating plants, morning daily newspaper factories. Workers other than factory workers, if on a weekly wage, must be paid tho full week’s pay; if on an hourly or daily wage they must be paid for the hours or days workgd, not more.
