RACING AND BETTING
HEED FOR OVERHAUL IN NEW ZEALAND MINISTER SUGGESTS COMMISSION OF INQUIRY [Pee United Press Association.] AUCKLAND, December 17. The opinion that there will have _to be reconstruction of the racing position in New Zealand and that a commission would have to be set up at an early date to inquire into the ramifications of racing and betting was made by the Hon. W. E. Parry this morning, when replying to a request by the Maramarua Hunt Club for a totalisator permit. The Minister said he had_ no power to interfere with the allocation of permits, which was the concern of the Racing Conference. He was strongly of the opinion that hunt clubs should be supported. He attributed the shortage of farm labour in a measure to farmers’ sons leaving the land because of concentration of sport in the_ cities. He added that one of the objects of the commission would be to ascertain the amount of money that left the Dominion for invesment in sweeps.
