(Received December 9, at 1.30 a.m.) The second 26,000-ton battleship launched at Kiel was christened Gneisenau by Frau Merkel, widow of the commander of the former Gneisenau, which was sunk in the Falkland* battle. (Received December 9, at 2 p.m.)' Thousands who had just finished sing< ing * Deutschland über Alles ’ after thd launching of the Gneisenau r.t Kiel were thunderstruck to see the vessel rush to the water with such force that she snapped two anchor chains, crossed the channel, and erased into a thick wall on the opposite hank of the river, where a line of marines were standing.
