ONE CAMP AGAINST SOCIALISM
SV6CCH 8F MR HAMILTON’S TOUR
I a an interview with a ‘ Southland Times ’ reporter on his return from a tour of the Nortfi Island, the Leader of the Opposition, Mr Adam Hamilton, discussed his visit to Auckland and other parts of the North Island, where some difficulties had arisen over his appointment as leader of the National Party. As a result of meeting the variou» executives, he said, these difficulties had been overcome in a satisfactory manner. It was hardly to be expected that a change of leadership would be made without some minor difficulties.
Mr Hamilton remarked that, although it might not bo easy to get all supporters of the National Party to be sufficiently tolerant to each other’s point of view to maintain undivided loyalty, he was convinced that they were almost unanimous in their determination to hold in one camp all, those opposed to the present Govdfnihent. \
That ideal could only be gained, Mr Hamilton said, if the different sections voting for the National Party were sufficiently tolerant to each other’s viewpoint to bo loyal to a decision when it was made, whether that decision was in relation to leader, policy, or candidate.
He had found a very lively interest being taken in politics at the present time, which was all to the good. Ho had taken the opportunity afforded by the meetings of discussing fundamental principles relating to democratic government and party politics, and the necessity for effective organisation, _so that at the nest election the voice of the majority would be correctly obtained. Although it was only I'2 months since the electors had placed the present Government on the Treasury benches, he felt there was a growing uneasiness about the course the Government was following. As time was passing quickly, it was essential that supporters of the National Party should, as early ns possible, be Effectively organised into one cohesive body, with the avoidance of any splitting of votes*
