SWIMMING CHAMPIONSHIPS

JUNIOR BREAST STROKE RACES ZENITH GIRL’S FAST TIME Swimming a stylish breast stroke and surging through the water with great dash, Miss Lynn Stockdill, of the Zenith Club, carried off the Otago 50yds junior girls' breast stroke championship ait the Kiwi Club’s hour at the Municipal Baths in the fast time of 42 4-ssec. This was Miss Stockdill’s first appearance at a championship meeting, and her time was only 2 2-ssee outside the New Zealand record held by Miss Clare Lynch, of Southland. It was more than 6sec faster than last year’s winning time. Second place went to Miss D. Ballantyne, of .the Dunedin Club, Miss M. Cleary, of the same club, filling third place. The 76yds boys’ breast stroke championship attracted eight competitors, two heats being swum off. M. Passmore (Kiwi), who could not swim in May of last year,, was the winner of the first heat in 71 3-ssec after a great race with J. Purdie (Kiwi), the latter, a diminutive swimmer, staging a grand finish and being barely a yard behind Passmore, who swam a very cool and heady race. The second heat was well won by I. Wilson (Kiwi), whose time was 72 4-ssec. I. M'Ewan (Zenith) was second. ' , The championship carnival- will be held at the Baths to-night. Kiwi A scored a comfortable, win against Dunedin A in'the A grade water polo competition at the centre hour at the Municipal Baths last night, Kiwi running out winners by 7 . goals to 1. Kiwi showed much , better combination, and, although S. W. Jarvis frequently gained possession of the ball in the swim up, he was not permitted to make much use of it; Kiwi’s positional play being good. -Kiwi’s success was due in a measure to Dunedin’s failure to mark their men, an exception being B. Kerr, but for whose efforts the score might have been larger. . Geddes played, a fine game for Kiwi, and was always in the picture, scoring five goals, Thomas finding the net twice. As usual, M. Taylor was a host in himself. and A. J. Leeden also played well. Both goalies, Pickard (Kiwi) and Harkess (Dunedin) played well, the former in particular bringing off some spectacular saves. Dunedin’s only goal wa» scored by K. Leckie, who played a useful game. Mr D. Watson was the roferee. , In the early game at the Baths bt. Clair B beat Kiwi B in the B grade competition by 7 goals to 0. .... The positions ox the teams in the A grade competition are':—
