JOTTINGS Nominations for the Dunedin Jockey /Club’s Summer Meeting, to be held on December 26 and 28, close on I nday, at 5 p.m. His owner has not yet decided whether Concertpitch will race during the holidays or be kept for the Trentham meeting next month. Greek Shepherd, who has been spelling since shortly after winning the Great. Northern St. Leger Stakes last Easter, is in work again, and appears to be quite sound. D. J. M'Donald says that the cause of Half Note’s lengthy spell was caused bv the mare having gone sore at the Wellington Winter Meeting last July. Emissary w T as nominated for the Railwav Handicap at Ellerslie, but will not make the trip, and he will go to the Manawatu and Wairarapa Meetings in company with Allspice and Gwennie. A correction has been made in the handicaps for the December Handicap at the Auckland Trotting Club’s Meeting. New Ideal and Travis Pringle are each on 12yds behind, and Icevus on 48, The Winton Jockev Club has decided to give £1,930 in stakes for its meeting to be held next February, an increase of £255 on last year. Mr C. E. Hassall has been appointed handicapper, Mr W. Young judge, and Mr F. Legat starter, Culotte, a four-year-old filly by Robespierre from Dame Straitlace, has been purchased with a view to racing on the West Coast circuit during the holidays. Culotte, will race at Hororata on Saturday, and then go over to the Coast. Gay Boa, who has not been racing well since he won a Jumpers’ Plate Handicap at Waimate last July, has been turned out for a spell. Miss Winston and Trisox have resumed training under F. Langford’s care. As the result of having been galloped on in the Mosgiel Handicap last October, Golden King is still in the paddock. As Night Wings is also spelling, Mr J. A. Smaill will have no galloper to carry his colours during the holiday meetings. Southern Chief has almost recovered from the bruised heel he suffered before the running of the New Zealand Derby Stakes, and he has resumed work to be prepared for the Champion Stakes to be run at Ashburton on Boxing Day.

Spiral, Entail, and Velocipede have been withdrawn from all engagements at the Auckland Cup Meeting. Master Brierly is doing good work in bis training at Ellerslie, and appears to have improved with his racing at Trentham and Riocarton.

W. H. Jones will resume race riding at Hororata, where he will handle Shawlette, and it is probable that he will go to the Auckland Meeting for the holidays. Jones has decided to hand in his trainer’s license and to, confine his attention to riding.

The name Will Shakespeare was disallowed by the Australian authorities for the two-year-old colt by Iliad, who was shipped some weeks ago to Australia, and the colt has been named Gold Standard by his owners, Messrs Freeman and Stanley. He is being trained by F. Dalton and is very highly regarded. Redolent (R. Beale) was sent over four hurdles at Riocarton on Friday and shaped very well. He is stated to be in good order for his engagements at Dunedin.

The nominations received for the Winton Trotting Club’s annual meeting total 160, as compared with 143 last year.

At Palmerston North on Monday, Plato, who appears to be improved since the C.J.C. Meeting, sprinted half a mile in the smart time of 49 2-ssec. He is going to Auckland, where he is expected to give a good, account of himself.

Wotan, who has resumed work at Hawera, is reported by the ‘ Dominion’s ’ special correspondent to be looking better than ever. On Saturday morning he pulled hard throughout his rounds of steady pace work on the the course proper.

At the sale of V.J.C. privileges at Omakau on Wednesday last the record price of £123 was paid, by the Commercial Hotel, Clyde, for the publican’s booth. All the other privileges also realised increased prices, as under: Race books, £25 (‘Dunstan Times’), and the fruit and .luncheon booths £32 and £2B by Mr R. Craig. Cuddle progresses well in her preparation for the Auckland Cup, and she galloped a nice mile at Trentham on Saturday morning in 1.43, being brought home by Boomerang over the last six furlongs. Cuddle will be given a race at Otaki on December 19, provided she is not over-burdened, and will be ridden by her Auckland Cup pilot, L. J. Ellis,

The following nominations (12) hare been received l for the Auckland Trotting Cup, £I,OOO (4.28) : —Smooger, Red Shadow. Rev Spec, Bonny Azure, Glenrossie, Bingen Palm, Grand Mogul, Evicus, Emilias Way, Auto Machine, King’s Warrior, and Graham Direct. Only Auto Machine, King’s Warrior, and Smooger are trained in Auckland province.

Several of the horses engaged at the Wyndham Meeting, and whose owners evidently intend to do the southern circuit, will be racing at Hororata on Saturday. This will be the last meeting in the South _ Island until the local fixture on Boxing Day.

ft is understood that only 20 nominations were received for the New Zealand Trotting Stakes to be run at Tiraaru in March, 1939 (says the ‘ Herald ’). This Hack of interest in unhoppled trotters on the part of owners is not encouraging, and it would occasion no surprise if the race were abandoned.

There was an unusual amount of bracketing in the Improvers’ Handicap at New Brighton on Saturday, and five horses were involved in the first two dividends. Cora! Prince and Big Nelson were bracketed with the winner (Rewai) and Molly Direct with the second horse (Rollalong). Place backers of the Rewai-Coral Prince-Big Nelson combination thus had nine chances of a dividend.

The 35-minute interval between races rule will probably be one of the most important matters to be considered at the next meeting of the New Zealand Trotting Conference, and the Christchurch clubs, which have found it quite impossible to comply with the present rule, are likely to be the prime movers in having it altered back to 40 minutes.

The following entries have been made by South Canterbury breeders for the national yearling sales to be held at Trentham next month (the drafts are shown in their order in the catalogue): —Account Messrs G. A. Kain and G. Fulton: Ch c, Lord Warden—Enocklynn. B c, Lord .Warden —Vennacher. Account Mr G. A. Kain, Gladstone Park, Orari: Ch c, Lord Warden—Monoxide. Cli c. Lord Warden—Matata. Pink Coat— The Geisha. B c, Pink Coat—Jarreliere.

On Boxing Bay last yoar Roi I’Or won the Ashburton Cup in the record lime for a grass track of 4min 15 4-ssec. Tn a 4min 27sec class he gave away GOyds, and this year ho will make an attempt to concede 72yds in the same class of race. He will probably meet a much stronger field than he encountered last year, hut if he is produced in the same excellent condition his prospects cannot he discounted. His owner, Mr P. Brown, who has been in Christchurch for the last few days, reports the little chestnut to he in "rent order and ready for another trip to the interDominion championships at Adelaide. After his win in the Ashburton Cup

last year Roi I’Or was on his waty to the championships in Perth, but an accident at Melbourne resulted in his being held up at Adelaide for some months. This was very had luck for all concerned, for while Evicus proved herself the champion pacer in the series of events decided, her subsequent form hardly suggested that she was in the same class as Boi I’Or.

The exact meaning and origin of the term “ at the distance ” has puzzled some racegoers, so some explanation might be serviceable; In the early days of racing, when most races were run in three heats, a lior.se had to finish within a distance, 240yds, of the winner, otherwise ho was debarred from starting in the other heats. 'I hat provision prevented one horse from merely trotting round after the others in the first heat, finishing about half a mile last, and then being fesh, having an easy task in the others,
