An inquiry at this office as to whether or not the cricket test matches in Australia will be played to a finish can be answered authoritatively by quoting the following paragraph from the cricket page of the ‘ Australasian ’: —“ All test games, of course, will be played to a finish. It is an Australian custom, and a grand one, as the next best thing to knowing how to win is knowing how to lose. Another local custom will be in vogue in that eight balls will be bowled to the over. English balls will be used in the test matches, and Australian balls in the other matches against the visitors, with the approval of the English captain. Surely the time is near at hand when no embargo will be placed on the Australian production.” The usual custom in England is to play only the last test match to a finish if the destiny of the “ ashes ” has not already been settled in the preceding four encounters.
