OPIUM SEIZURE
20 TINS WORTH £4OO CARRIER FINED £25 [Pan United Press Association.] WELLINGTON, December 8. Twenty tins of opium, of a total retail value of something like £4OO, were seized by the detectives and Customs officials at Thorndon Station last night just before the departure of the Auckland express. Basil Francis Pocock (26), a seaman, pleaded guilty before Mr Ferner, S.M., to-day to being found in possession of a dangerous drug imported in contravention of the Act. It was explained that accused was arrested after he had bought a train ticket, and the tins were found hidden among clothing in his suit case. Mr Boys, for the accused, urged that, he was not the person who brought the opium into the country, but merely the carrier from Wellington to Auckland, where he belonged. Accused was convicted and fined £25 and costs. He was allowed a week in which to pay.
