TRAM FARES.
TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —“ Ratepayer ” is quite right when he says, “ Why not charge a fee of 6s a year for a push bicycle?” I say “Include the motor _ bicycle as well.” It is done in Christchurch if I am not mistaken, for I have lived there. Also, to help swell the revenue of trams, make a charge for carriage of go-carts. I think it was 2d for a go-cart in Christchurch if I remember correctly. When one comes to compare the tram fares here with those of other cities, one has no cause for complaint. There has been a series of years of cheap trams; because necessity calls now for a very small increase in fares there is weeping and wailing. I read that bus fares are not to rise, neither are the charges on the Mornington trams, so why all the grumbling? The council will have to keep pace with the times and extend its tram services,, and one place in particular is Elgin road. There is a loss of revenue there with the present bus service, and it does not cater for the public as it should do.—l am, etc., Ratepayer 2. December 8.
