FORTNIGHTLY COUNCIL MEETING LAST OF THE YEAR The last meeting of the City Council for the year was Held last night, those present being the mayor (Rev. E. T. Cox), Crs Allan, Mitchell, Neilson, Batchelor, Scott, Cameron, Bilverstone, Munro, M'Millan, Shepherd, and Begg. CHRISTMAS PICTURES. Mr 6. L. Johnston, of the Octagon Pictures, wrote asking for permission to show a picture programme on Christmas Day as bad been granted to other theatres. On the motion of Cr Batchelor permission was granted on similar conditions. EXTENSION OF TRAM SHEDS. Cr Mitchell, in moving the adoption of the report of the Tramways Committee, referred to the proposal to extend the car depot and said that tenders would be called for the work. It had been found that, with the room required for the buses, the present building was too small. As well as providing more space the proposal would get rid of the old and ugly building at the corner. Cr Bilverstone said he hoped the frontage of thS new building would be modernised. That could oe done with advantage. The Mayor said the architect must conform to some extent. The Chairman said the matter raised by. Cr _ Bilverstone would receive consideration. The report was adopted. WORKS COMMITTEE. ’ Cr Munro moved the adoption of the report of the Works Committee, which recommended that authority be given for the regrading of the grass side margin on the eastern side of Cumberland street, between Water street and Anderson’s Bay road, utilising scheme 5 labour. The carriageway along this portion of the street has recently been regraded and is now below the level of the side margin. It is proposed to lift the existing turf and replace it as the regrading proceeds. The estimated cost of carrying out the work with scheme 5 labour is £230, and application has been made to tne Labour Department for authority to put the work in hand accordingly.; ‘ Cr Allen said it had been proposed by the General Committee that portion of Cumberland street be paved and. used as a parkliug -area.’.; Inc that ease the work promised would iYw.- only-a-temporary expedient, and it would be more economical _if the suggested’ expenditure were withheld and later on the whole width tar sealed. - Cr Munro, who said there was _ a great deal in what Ur Allen said, agreed to take the clause back to the committee. With the Exception of the above clause the report was adopted. FIVE-DAY WEEK. ' _ Cr Silverstone, in moving the adoption of the report of the Finance Committee, said it was proposed to introduce the five-day week for the clerical staff in the Town Hall. Full consideration , had been giveh to the matter, and it was recommended that the Town Hall be closed on Saturday mornings as from January 9. Several other suggestions had been made, one being to keep a skeleton staff on Saturday mornings, but it was found that that would not work out very satisfactorily. Citizens would please_ note that they, had five days on which to pay their accounts. The staff would commence work at 8.30 a.m. instead of 9 a.m. The report was adopted. TENDERS. Tenders were accepted as follow.— Scrap Cast Iron.—Messrs A. and T. Burt, at £3 10s per ton.’ Three Tons of Scrap Copper.—J. D. Brodie and Co. Ltd. (Wellington), £4l per ton. Motor Car for the Tramways Department.—Otago Motors Ltd., 14 h.p. Vauxhall, £320, less £7O for a trade-in car. Plastering at Lake Mahinerangi Dam.—G. M‘Donald, £348 15s.
