MANY SUCCESSES

ASSOCIATION OF BROWN AND FINGLETON PERFORMANCES IN AFRICA The century partnership by Brown and Fingleton for the An Australian XI. against England at the Cricket Ground was but a repetition of the many successes the pair enjoyed in South Africa last season (says the Sydney ‘Sun’)* Brown and Fingleton first came together in Brisbane in 1933, when the pair opened for New South Wales. It is an interesting fact that Brown was run out for a “ duck ” on that occasion. So splendid has been the understanding between the pair since then that, although they have taken many cheeky singles since then, they have only once been separated by a run out since. Peculiarly enough, that also was against Queensland, with which State Brown now plays, in the 1934-35 season. The pair were on the way to a 200 partnership when Fingleton drove a ball back hard off Oxenham. Oxenham touched the ball and deflected it on to the bails. Brown was backing up and was thus run out in a peculiar manner. In their first game in South Africa against Natal, Brown and Fingleton put on 215 for the first wicket. In the second test against Africa they made 105, to bo followed by the record Australian stand in tests of 233 in the third test at Cape Town. They mado 162 against South Africa in the fifth test at Durban. Brown and Fingleton have now been associated in century opening partnerships against England, .South Africa, Queensland, Victoria, South Australia, and West Austfalia.
