MEETING OF COUNCIL The fortnightly meeting of the St. Kiida .Borough Council , was held last night, there being present the mayor (Mr J. J. Marlow), Crs G. Glue, W. J. Davidson, J. H. Hinton, R. S. Brent, T. D. ,B. Roy, N. D. Anderson, W. Lovell. EMPLOYMENT SUBSIDY. A letter from the District Employment Officer advised that final approval had now been granted for the payment of a subsidy of £2 ss. a man a week in respect of the employment of registered and eligible unemployed married men on the cleaning and lining of water mains in the borough.—Received. OPENING OF. CHURCH GATES. The Rev. T. Skusc wrote stating that on Sunday next there would bo an official opening of the new gates to the St. Kiida Methodist Church, and inviting representatives of the council to be present, and the mayor to address the congregation.—Received. SURF LIFE-SAVING. 'With the Christmas and New Year holidays fast approaching, wrote the secretary of the Now Zealand Surf Life-saving Association, Otago branch, the association had again favourably considered the necessity of permanently patrolling the St. Clair and St. Kiida beaches during the holidays. Last year the patrols rendered a great service to the public and helped, to popularise further both beaches. The appointments last season commenced a week before Christmas and were for a term of eight weeks, each patrolman being paid £2 a week. This year, however, there would probably be a large increase in the bathing public, and the patrol, it was considered,, should be for TO weeks and_ the rate of pay £3 a week. To maintain the patrol as mentioned would require £6O, and the City Council would be asked to contribute the greater part, as the tramways derived considerable revenue from bathers. The St. Kiida Council was therefore asked for a grant of £lo. It was decided to grant the sum of £5, the same amount as last year. COUGHTREY STREET PLOTS. In connection with the request by residents that grass plots be laid in Coughtrey street, Cr Hintbn reported that members of the committee set up to inspect the street, while having every sympathy with the residents who wished to beautify the street, were of the opinion that the council could hardly stand the cost'of what would be an amenity, not a necessity. Other residents in the vicinity were waiting to see what was done with Coughtrey street before asking for similar improvements, and before long the council would find itself faced with an account running into four figures. Residents should make some offer to bear portion of the cost. Or Lovell moved that ,the _residents of Coughtrey street be advised that the cost of the work would bo £255. and the council felt that it was too much to go on with the work. , Cr Davidson seconded the motion, which was carried. REPORTS. The Inspector reported that one case of infections disease had been attended to. Traffic duty had also been carried out, buildings inspected, and com-
plaints attended to. As the trots and the Summer Show would he held shortly, he suggested the appointment of an individual as an assisting traffic inspector.—Adopted.. The forman’s report suggested that, in the next two weeks, footpaths be sealed oh one side of each of the following streets Douglas, Larkworthy, Plunket. and Pnnce Albert road, general maintenance to be carried out also. —Adopted. .. , Nineteen water bursts had been repaired in the last fortnight, stated the plumber’s report, while other works done were the fixing of a raiser on a fire plug at the corner of Queen’s Drive and Grove street, ‘the fixing of feet valves on the dual_ water main in Queen’s Drive, repairs to taps and stopcocks, and general duties.— Adopted.
