SCHOOL WITHOUT TEACHER
board unable to fill post COMMITTEE SECRETARY TAKES OVER [Per United Press’ Association] WELLINGTON, October 21. In marked contrast to conditions in the slump period, when many teachers were out of work, there is an apparent shortage in this profession since the Wellington Education Board has been unable to send a relieving teacher to the Makomako School, where there are 19 children at present without a teacher. , . ■ A fortnight ago the sole teacher appointed there was granted sick leave, and finished at the school on Friday of last week. When the school reopened on Monday morning there was no relieving teacher present, and nothing from the hoard as to the likelihood of a temporary teacher. In consequence the secretary of the school committee, Mrs Elsing, volunteered to take charge of the children and carry on. The board was communicated with, but informed the committee that no teachers were available.
The parents in the district are indignant at the attitude of the board, and consider that it could at least have made a temporary appointment of a Training College student, pending a suitable arrangement, at this most important period of the year.
