MODERN ART

FINE DISPLAY AT LIBRARY The display in the lending and reference departments are devoted to modern art this 1 week. The extreme modernists are represented in the following works: —David Gascoyne explains the theory of surrealism in ‘ A Short Survey of Surrealism,’ Andre Breton in ‘ What is Surrealism?’, Herbert Read in ‘Unit One’ and ‘Art Now,’ and Herbert Read, Anthony Blunt, and Alick West in the July number of ‘Left Review.’ Herbert Read gives a survey of the various schools of the modern movement — geometric art, surrealism, cubism, etc. —in ‘ Unit One ’ and ‘ Art Now.’ This is also done by various writers in ‘ Five On Revolutionary Art.’ In ‘ The Arts To-day ’ W. H. Auden writes an essayon psychology and art, while Geoffrey Grigson writes on painting and sculpture, both dealing with the most modern of the moderns. There are several works on the “ less modern moderns.” These are ‘ Modern European Art,’ by Ernest H. R. Ceilings; ‘Claude Monet and His Garden,’ by Stephen Gwynn; ‘ Lust For Life ’ (dealing with Van Gogh), by Irving Stone; ‘Paul Cezanne,’ by Gerstle Mack; ‘Modern Art,’ by Thomas Craven; ‘Art in a Changing Civilisation,’ by Eric Gill; ‘After Picasso,’ by James Thrall Soby; ‘Art in America,’ by Cahill and Barr; ‘The Modern Movement in Painting,’ by T. W. Karp; chapters in ‘ Masterpieces of Figure Painting,’ by Eric Newton; ‘ Art in the U.S.S.R.,’ edited by C. G. Holme; ami ‘The Meaning of Modern Sculpture,’ by R. H. Wilenski.

Modern - views of art are expounded in ‘ Art and the Life of Action,’ by Max Kastman ; ‘The Artist and His Public, 1 by Eric Newton: ‘ Art,’ by Eric Gill; ‘/Esthetics and Psychology,’ byCharles Mauron; ‘The Study of Art,' by R. H. Wilenski; ‘Speculations,’ by Hnlme: ‘ Mnmmonart,’ by Upton Sinclair; ‘Art.’ by Clive Bell; and ‘Art and Civilisation,’ by Marvin and Clut-ton-Brock. Miscellaneous works are the ‘ Studio Year Book of Decorative Art. 1936,’ ‘Design,’ by Paul Carrington; and ‘ Chinese Mysticism and Chinese Painting.’ by Georges Duthiiit. This latter is especially- interesting, since it shows the influence that Chinese painters have had on modern European painters. The Library’s Association lias also forwarded for display 30 posters, which were entered in its recent competition, including the ihree winning efforts.
