BURNSIDE STOCK SALES
REDUCTION IK CATTLE VALUES Following small yardings last week, increased entries were sent in for today’s sales at Burnside, and in most cases the resulting sales were at decreased prices. Fat lambs met with one of the best sales this spring, the top price of the season being realised when a special consignment sold up to 365. Very fair quality was seen in the yarding of 282 head of fat cattle. Although there were not many heavyweight bullocks forward, there was an even lot of medium sorts showing quality and finish. Prime cows and heifers were in shorter supply than previously, the majority of the entry being made up of plain, light ; and weedy stuff. The sale was inclined to drag from the start, and values were easier from 15s to 20s a head for bullocks. However, prime cows and heifers did not ease to the same extent. The sale continued as at the beginning until the last two races were reached, when there was a further slight decline in prices. . A special line of lambs from Winton, which was included in the total yarding of 69, commanded a great deal of attention, selling to 365, which is the top price of the season. Other pens were also quite attractive, while there was a tail end of poor stuff, and there was no demand for the latter. The sale was a good one, prices being firm at last week’s rates until near the finish, when there was a drop of about
2s There was a fairly good entry of some 1,800 fat sheep, and the quality taken as a whole was good, wethers were largely represented, some of those forward ‘being specially fine, with a large number of medium and light sorts. Some extra good ewes were also present, and there were few lights. Shorn sheep were penned, the majority or both sexes of these being very good. There was a good entry of hoggets, the majority of which were medium or light-weights. Among the better-class quality was a showing of a few outstanding sorts. The sale had barely started when the paper went to press. Prices were then easier than at the last fixture, but the general opinion held was that they would drop still further unless an outside buyer competed. A small yarding of store cattle was comprised mainly of odd lots, with one or two pens of small steers. Anything showing condition and breeding sold under keen competition at prices which were comparable with those of a week ago. One pen of 2J-year-old steers in forward condition brought £6 13s, while others sold from £4 5s to £5 2s Gd. Cows were worth £3 19s and heifers from £2 2s to £4 ss. There were 150 fats and 113 stores in the pig pens. Baconers were selling from £3 to £4 10s, light sorts being worth about 7d lb and heavies about Gd. Porkers were bringing from £1 15s to £3, or about 7Jd.
