'A Press Association cable message from Fremantle states that the former cricketer Jack Hobbs and his wife arrived there by the Maloja from London yesterday. Mr E. Taylor, accompanied by Mrs Taylor, left by the 11.35 express this morning, en route to England and the Continent.
Mr J. M. Samson travelled north by the second express to-day. Mr L. M‘Cartney left on his return to Auckland by this morning’s second express. y Mr Henry R. Harper, manager for. New Zealand of the Victoria Insurance Company Ltd., arrived in Dunedin yesterday and is a guest at the Otago Club.
Mr D. T. Fleming, Mayor of Balclutha, arrived in Dunedin yesterday. At yesterday’s meeting of the Otago University Council a motion of sympathy with the relatives of Mr J. M. Paterson was carried, members standing in silence. Mr F. S. Shanks, of Dunedin, has been appointed to a position on the staff of the Edendale School, and left for the south on Saturday. At the quarterly meeting of the Oamaru Fire Board yesterday, the following minute of appreciation of the services of Mr S. B. Macdonald, whose removal had necessitated his resignation, was approved;—“ This board places on record its regret at the resignation of, Mr Macdonald on his departure from Dunedin to take up a position in Auckland, he having been for a number of years a valued and useful member of the board. Mr Macdonald brought to the board a complete knowledge of fire brigade adi ministration and a fund of technicalknowledge of the requirements of tha brigade, and his suggestions and advice were at all times much appreciated. This board congratulates him upon his well-earned promotion, and wishes him well in his new sphere of activities.”
