SHOCK FOR EMPLOYEES
OFFERED MORE THAN THEY CLAIM VALUE OF SKILLED TANNERS [Per United Press Association.] WELLINGTON, October 16. The unusual position of the employers, in their counter-claims, offering skilled' tanners higher wages than was claimed arose in the dispute between the Wellington Tanners’ Union and Paves Tannery Ltd., the employees claiming 2s 6d and the employers offering 2s 7]d. A 40-hour week was agreed upon—-7.30 a.in. to 5.30 p.m.—with provision for shifts, when necessary, between 6 a.m. and 11 p.m., prividlng a shilling extra were paid. Both claims and counter-claims set down the wages of labourers- at 2s 2d an hour. The managing director said that the offer to skilled taiiners was not “ loaded.” A skilful tanner was necessary, and it took a good man to do the work.
The offer was agreed to and the overtime rates arranged, as were statutory holidays and meal money (Is 6d). The only remaining matter is the wages for youths, which was to be discussed this afternoon.
