' The engineers _ walked off the Strathaird, which is due to sail for Australia on October 16. They pre* sented an ultimatum to the P. and O. Company stating that they will not sail unless their demands for better hours and pay are granted. NO COMMENT BY COMPANY. LONDON, October 15. (Received October 16, at 1.30 a.m.) The Strathaird engineers are _ demanding an increase from £lO 15s to £l3 monthly, a reduction in overtime, and better food. The passengers total 1,100. The P. and O. Company is making no comment. AMICABLE SETTLEMENT. LONDON, October 15. (Received October 16, at 10.30 a.m.) The P. and O. Company states that the Strathaird difficulties have been amicably settled, and the ship will sail to-morrow. The company denies that the engineers threatened to strike. Some merel.y stated that they were not willing to sign on unless the_ terras ot their engagement were reconsidered.
