NEGOTIATIONS

Before a decision to stage the world’s heavy-weight championship battle between Jimmy Braddock and Max Schmeling at New York on Juno 8 next was made recently, negotiations lasting five hours were necessary. ’Braddock evaded Schmeling’s challenge for the battle to be held on September 22, arthritis in the little left finger keeping him out of the ring. Schmeling refused to meet Joe Louis again, as was hoped, unless he was given a guarantee of 600,000 dollars. He declared he was willing to meet the negro on those terms, but even the prospect of a million-dollar gate for the return match would not tempt the promoters into paying him that sura. Schmeling has returned to Germany, but will make a barnstorming tour of American cities in November.
