CROSS-COUNTRY RAGE JOHN M'GIASHAN COLLEGE M. MANN THE WINNER Considering the gruelling conditions under which it was contested, the 85 competitors having to contend with a head wind of almost gale force for most of the way, and at times finding the treacherous surface of a part of the course a distinct handicap, the annual cross-country race of John M'Glashan College yesterday afternoon produced some exeellent-'times. The record for the three-mile distance is 18min 58sec, established 'in 1932 by A. W. Suther-

land, and the best time on tills occasion was 21niin 17see, registered by T. M‘D. Stevenson, who ran a finely-judged race from the scratch mark. Generous handicapping invariably results in a member of the junior school being hist home, j\l . -Mann achieving the distinction off the lOmin mark, his time of 27min <losec being meritorious for such a youthful competitor. He was closely followed by another small runner, li). .M. Held, off the llmin handicap. The course extended from the college, through the I?oss Crock Reservoir, (which provided a test of stamina, the track being very greasy and the creek

difficult to negotiate), along the Leith Valley road, and back to the school. The majority of the competitors finished. Besides a trophy given for the first primary school competitor to cover the course, one was also given to the first secondary school runner homo, and was won by A. M Boyes (ornin), his lime being 22niin sSsec. J. B. Milligan (4miu) was second. Second fastest time for the race was recorded by f. .1). Norton, who went the journey in 21min 4Sscc. Mr J. A.
